Google to give $1 billion to nonprofits and help Americans get jobs in the new economy

The job market is really going to be changing in the next few years as companies are trying to automate as many tasks as possible. Really nice of Google to give money to non profits to try and help people pick of digital skills that are going to be necessary.

Yext begins to verticalize local business listings syndication with ‘Yext for Food’

Yext begins to verticalize local business listings syndication with ‘Yext for Food’

I have no clue why investors give Yext money. First they trick customers into thinking their product has value towards improving SEO. Now they go from, we’re going to make sure all your data is accurate in all this website directories to, oh, we’re going to make our own website directory lol. Not smart. Almost all traffic to these website directories come from search engines. And you better believe that if there is any money to be made in these website directories, that Google is going to do it themselves and devour the market. They control the website traffic to these sites, so if they want to steer it to themselves, they can. I can’t see Yext staying in business long term because they live off of perception, not actual value.

Snapchat’s Status Among Teens Notches Another Gain

Snapchat’s Status Among Teens Notches Another Gain

History has shown so far it’s almost impossible for social media websites to stay on top forever. So far, Facebook has done it because they buy out their competitors like Instagram and Pinterest. Snapchat seems to be the next threat they might be looking to buy as recent study shows teens prefer Snapchat 47% to Facebook 9%.

6 ways IoT will make local search for SMBs scalable

6 ways IoT will make local search for SMBs scalable

IoT (aka internet of things, aka non computer devices that connect to the internet like watches, appliances, cars, etc.), the real value is starting to be revealed. Seems that IoT can help internet marketing not just by having more devices to serve ads on. Seems the key value could be collecting offline data about users. When someone is working out, when their car has broken down, when they’re cooking. This offline data could lead to a gold mine of targeting options for banner ads and even search ads. The caveat though is how the public responds to this data collection and whether they’re cool with it. They might not be, but we’ll see!

Commercial Break? Many Just Reach for Another Device

Commercial Break? Many Just Reach for Another Device

Future of push advertising? Banner ads on apps. Main problem with almost all push ads is that it’s very hard to capture the audience’s attention. TV ads, online video ads, people turn away to another device or browser. Banner ads on websites may not get noticed. But on an app where the user’s full attention is, on a small screen, a static banner ad has the best chance to capture attention. Ads on apps are the gold standard.

The YouTube Ads perk you didn’t know existed

The YouTube Ads perk you didn’t know existed

I’ve been predicting for awhile that in 3-5 years, consumers will expect all businesses to have video content, just as much as they expect a website. And Google is starting to make a big move to speed that process along. In select markets, for $150, Google is now offering a local production crew to make a video for you, plus $150 in advertising credit. That’s a really great deal. Similar to Customwave’s pay for $100, get a website free and $100 of ad credit. There haven’t been a lot of technological advances this year that I’ve been impressed with, but this does impress. It could be big.

Facebook debuts Watch, its home for original shows

Facebook debuts Watch, its home for original shows

Now Facebook is getting into the streaming business. More specifically, the digital channel business. Everybody with a streaming service is sort of like the new “channel”. This is where we’re heading. You’re not going to pay a cable company or satellite dish company per month for a bundle. You’re going to pay different streaming channels a la carte. Which is wonderful for everybody except the middle man cable and dish companies.

Amazon already has its eye on the car repair market, and auto shops should be worried

It looks like Amazon is experimenting with the idea of bundling local services with products. My opinion, I think they’d be better off selling advertising on their website. If there was more money to be made partnering with local services, Google would already be doing it. But they’re not.
