Google: Negative SEO Via Canonicals Redirects Don’t Really Work

Google: Negative SEO Via Canonicals Redirects Don’t Really Work

When it comes to negative SEO, i can’t remember a single time Google publicly admits, yes, this tactic works and hurts websites. They don’t do it. Makes them look bad. So when Google’s spokesman says the canonical negative SEO trick doesn’t work, I’m not surprised. It’s one of those things they will work on and figure out internally, but they can’t admit negative SEO is possible or effective.

New Undetectable Type of Negative SEO Attack Uncovered

As if SEO wasn’t hard enough already, negative SEO has been increasing. Which isn’t surprising, because if the main problem is lack of real estate on the 1st page, the best solution is how do you take out your competitor’s? Well, traditionally, negative SEO has revolved around sending bad links to the target website. But now it’s started to evolve into using canonical tags, which are really, really hard to detect. What the heck does that mean? It means if you’re doing negative SEO, you build a bad website and use a canonical tag to point to a competitor’s website, showing association, and with association and with the negative website being bad, it sinks the competitor’s site. It’ll be interesting to see what Google does to stop this.

Senators introduce privacy ‘bill of rights’ to protect consumer data

As predicted, the government is using the Facebook “scandal” to try and get it’s hooks in to regulating the internet, similar to what Europe is doing with GDPR. It’s not needed.

Here Comes The Fake Videos, Too

Great article by The New York Times on the coming problems with fake video technology. And just as its become easier and easier to create your own website, within a few years, it’ll pretty easy for anyone to create a fake video. Not just using a person’s face, but their clothes, the rest of their body. My big fear is that kid’s will go nuts over this to bully other kids. The lines between reality and virtual reality are going to become even more blurry and I’m not sure what us parents are going to do to protect our kids from it.

These online volunteers fight fake reviews, ghost listings and other scams on Google Maps — and say the problem’s getting worse

These online volunteers fight fake reviews, ghost listings and other scams on Google Maps — and say the problem’s getting worse

Good story on black hat SEO in Google Maps. My takeaway is that despite Google’s problems fighting spam, they will eventually figure it out. They always do. I stopped doing black hat SEO years ago because it’s not sustainable and I got tired of having to look for the next trick after getting shut down. White hat SEO might not get the results black hat SEO does, but it is sustainable, which is extremely necessary if you want to keep clients paying month in and month out for SEO.

More than 80% of US Digital Display Ads Will Be Bought Programmatically in 2018

It’s looking like in 2018, 82% of banner ads will be bought programmatically. In english, that means they will be bought with automated software. And I have a pretty good educated guess that there’s not many small businesses in that 82% that pay for programmatic software. My point is that in 2018, small businesses are still not sold on the value on banner ads.
